Fortress of Mist is the second book in the Merlin’s Immortals Series by Sigmund Brouwer. The first is The Orphan King. While it is definitely a book that can stand on its own I would recommend reading the Orphan King first.
This is a classic kind of story about knights, castles, swordfights, druids, wizards and sorcery. There were plot twists and unexpected turns within the book which made it both an interesting and quick read.
The character development was great. It made me want to read the rest of the series and find out more about the people and land that the author has so lovingly crafted. Overall I would have to say that I really enjoyed reading this book. It was another quick read that kept me wanting to know what was going to happen next.
This book is written for young adults, I would say upper middle school through high school. These are books I would have devoured as a child. I would also feel comfortable allowing my own children or students to read these books and not be negatively influenced.
I was a little confused because there is some mention of King Arthur and Merlin that just kind og hung there and I wasn’t sure how it fit into the book. The writing is perfectly geared for young readers, simple yet poetic and flows beautifully with a nice pace. The author is a really great writer with potential still bubbling beneath his pen. This is a book both girls and boys would both enjoy.
